Boss Babe// Kelly Amundsen from Blush Flowers

For a lot of woman the moment that they feel like a bride is when they first hold their bouquet. Flowers add romance and can finish off the look of a venue like nothing else. Flowers by Blush has a created a name for itself in the wedding scene and for a good reason. “Flowers are approached as an art form at Blush, and no two weddings are ever the same. From a single beautiful bouquet or floral headpiece through to the most elaborate venue styling, a candy and dessert buffet, an opulent entrance or fanciful fete, the girls at Blush simply love to do gorgeous weddings no matter the scale or style! I chatted to the lovely Kelly Amundsen who is the creative director at Blush Flowers and her advice for brides is priceless.

FM-Firstly tell us a little about yourself. I recently moved to Matakana with my husband and  4 year son Hugo. We are growing our own veggies and some flowers too! And doing up a very cute Villa in between all my weddings! I am always making and doing – if not flowers, Im baking, painting, planting etc – I really love to be busy.

FM-How did your passion for flowers begin? I completely stumbled upon flowers as my career. After I left school I studied fashion design, hairdressing and Make up artistry and nothing grabbed me until I saw an amazing bunch of flowers in the Viva made by Wild Poppies and thought wow Id like to try that! That was 15 years ago and I have never looked back! _MG_5407[1]

FM-What are the right kind of questions brides should ask to get exactly what they want from their florist? To start with, the more information/detail you can offer your florist the better. Its best to wait until you have a venue, dress and colour palette chosen. I tend to ask my Brides for 4 words to summarize the look and feel they wish to capture on the day which steers me in the direction of knowing what will best work for them.

FM-What advice would you give to a bride who just doesn’t know how to start when it comes to the flowers for her wedding? Find out what flowers are in season to begin. Pinterest is a huge help these days so collecting images and creating a mood board will be so helpful. Trust is key, as you don’t get a preview of your flowers prior to your wedding day you need to ensure your florist is skilled and most importantly shares your vision.

FM-What is your personal style when it comes to flower arrangements? My personal style would be quite simple with flower arranging. At home I prefer to pick a flower I love and leave it that. A bunch of fresh sweet peas in a fav old jug or a single perfect rose in a perfume bottle. If I’m being lazy a white Phalenopsis Orchid plant always does the trick!

FM-Beside from being a florist what are your other passions in life? I love DIY!!! I’m in my element when painting a room or sanding a door. Baking would be another – I love making cakes – and eating them!

FM-Your perfect day off would be? Perfect day off – taking my little boy out for lunch and too see a movie. Or shopping!

FM-Do you have a stand out moment from being a part of a brides special day? I think one of the very best parts of what I do is that moment the Bride sees her Bouquet. Every single time I hand it over I get goose bumps as its such a happy and exciting moment. I’ve had girls cry all the way through to jumping up and down – its really wonderful.

FM-Where is your most favorite place you have travelled and where would you like to travel to next? Fav place – another hard one. I loved Eppernay and St Tropez in France. I would love to visit the Maldives.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Wow a hard question. The past few years I have been saying how Ill start taking less weddings so I can relax a little over summer, then every year we just get busier! So Id say Ill definitely still be making Wedding flowers! I would love to expand into buying and hiring lots of gorgeous props that we can’t get here in NZ, like linens and cutlery. Maybe build a house! Open a stunning Cake shop….! Mel and Cliff_655[1] (Copy)

FM-Last but not least…what’s your favorite flower? Hardest of all! Fav flower would be Gardenias – but I do love them all! x
