One of the most common things I hear from my clients is, ‘I want to wear red lips but….(insert fear here)” I don’t want it to make me look old, I don’t know what shade would suit me, I don’t know if I can pull it off. Today I want to address the fear that is behind the classic red lip.

When it comes to wearing red lips this is what I always say…If you are not going to own it, then don’t wear it! Sounds harsh but I feel the same about a lot of things. If you are going to wear a red lipstick and cover your mouth or be uncomfortable then don’t wear it. But there are a lot of things you can do to make yourself more comfortable.

First things first you need the right shade. If you have never worn red then you might want to start with a mid tone red or a red with a little more pink in it to soften the harshness. Pop into your nearest makeup counter and tell them your a red lip virgin and (if they are professional) then they should walk you through some shades and try them on. I always say don’t go makeup shopping with no makeup on at all. That’s like going to the hair dressers with no makeup (nothing is worse then starring at yourself in the hairdressers mirror for an hour) So when you try the red lipstick on make sure you have some makeup on your eyes. Stand back and really have a look. If you love it then great, if you don’t ask yourself why. Is it too bright or dark? And work from there.

Once you leave the store with your perfect red lippy then follow these steps for when you are ready to pop it on for your next party.

1. Its important that your lips are nice and soft you will want to gently exfoliate your lips. I sometimes use my toothbrush but for a more refinded exfoliator try this amazing Lush exfoliator it smells divine.

4. When your amazing red lipstick has been applied you will want to do one last thing that will stop you from looking like Emma and Paris ( below). Place your index finger in your mouth and pop your lips around it (like a drinking bottle) and pull your finger out. You will find there will be some lippy on your finger and that is what would have been on your teeth! Your welcome.
