How to Help Sensitive Skin and Products that can Really Help

Recently I have been inundated with emails from brides-to-be who are concerned about their skin. The most common issue is sensitive skin including everything from eczema to full breakouts. Skin issues can be hard enough to combat let alone with your wedding day fast approaching. I am not a dermatologists and I will always recommend seeing one if making simple changes to your skincare regime don’t work. Some of the products below I was lucky enough to get to try as a blogger but I only ever recommend a product if I have used it over time and if I really love the product. Looking after your skin is important and I truly do believe that for each skin issue in the world there is a wonderful product that can help. Remember that your skin has cycles and you need to stick at a product for at least 20-40 days before you might see an improvement.

Top 3 Ways you can help your sensitive skin-

1. Don’t Judge a Cream by Its Fragrance! It can be very easy to smell a product and think that it must be great for sensitive skin due to the plant like smells or even lack of fragrance. Don’t be pulled in just by the fragrance alone! Fragrance is a leading cause of contact dermatitis, an itchy red rash that can take weeks to improve. Find products that contain minimal fragrance or, better yet, no fragrance at all!

2. Don’t Pick! Did you know that people picking at spots is so common that dermatologists have given it a name! Acne Excoriee is a term used to describe the appearance of picked pimples. We think that when we pick at a pimple we are helping it heal however when you squeeze a pimple, only 20% of its contents are ejected from the skin (ugh). The remaining 80% is forced deeper into the dermis, resulting in prolonged inflammation and delayed healing. So if you’re sensitive skin results in dry patches or pimples do your skin a favor and stop picking.

3. Don’t Overdo It! There seems to be so many products out there that claim to be able to help that it can be easy to fall into the trap to apply multiple layers of skincare to our skin. However you can get “itchy red bump syndrome” (flashy name aye) when you use too many products onto your skin. I recommend no more than three products on your face at one time. A lot of my clients with sensitive skin found a massive improvement when they simplified their skincare regime. Less is more for your delicate skin.

Products that can help-

  1. Sukin’s Super Greens Detoxifying Facial Scrub. Exfoliating can seem risky to anyone with sensitive skin. It might seem like you are going to aggravate your skin but it’s all about having the right exfoliator. The Sukin Detoxifying is free of sulphates, parabens, harsh detergents and fragrances. Makes exfoliating possible for the person with sensitive skin. What I like about it is how my skin doesn’t get that annoying tight feeling after I use it like other harsher exfoliators do.

2. Weleda’s new Almond Sensitive Skin Body Care range has been specifically designed to calm, soothe and support sensitive, allergy-prone, inflamed and dry skin. Each product is bursting with skin-calming natural ingredients, including the goodness of sweet almond oil – a particularly delicate and mild pure plant oil rich in essential fatty acids. What I love about this range personally is how calming I find it to my skin. The products are thick and the soft almond smell is divine.

3. Neutrogena’s New Natural Cleansing and Makeup Remover effectively cleans skin and removes 99% of makeup in one step without stripping skin’s natural moisture. This cleanser contains Peruvian Tara seed bionutrient which is clinically proven to soften skin naturally. Most people who have sensitive skin find that the eye area is the most sensitive but this cleaner is developed for the gentle eye area.
